My father and my brother were in the clothing business.

Rashida Dhalla

Streetwear, Streetforce, Jezebel, and a menswear label called Haight & Ashbury. I worked alongside them for more than ten years.

Haight & Ashbury wasn't sold as clothing. It was sold as an attitude — a man comfortable in his own skin, whatever age he happened to be. That is a strange thing to learn young: you are never really selling the object. I have never had to unlearn it.

I started in real estate in 1991, at my oldest brother Meb's brokerage, RE/MAX MVP. I was a single mother with two small children, Adam and Hannah, and I needed work that would let me raise them without putting a ceiling on what I could earn. From 1997 I spent a decade in the United States, buying, renovating and reselling houses as an investor. I was not licensed there; that work was my own.

Both of them are gone now, my father and Meb. I am the one still doing this.

When I came back to Canada and joined Realtron I didn't take clients. I took the Branch Administrator job first — compliance, trust accounting, transaction processing, and all the specific ways a file goes wrong.

It is the least glamorous room in a brokerage and most agents never set foot in it. I wanted to know how the thing actually worked before I sold anything through it. That decision is the reason I could open my own brokerage nine years later instead of just wanting to.

The practice I built came almost entirely from referral. Some of those clients are still with me twenty years on. There are families I have now sold to twice, the second time to the children.

What people write about afterwards is never the house. It is a divorce, or a death, or thirty years in one place, or a first purchase made alone by someone who never expected to be doing it alone. Most of that work is holding your nerve on somebody else's behalf.

Working a file. This is most of the job.

In February 2017 I put my name on a brokerage. Broker of Record is not a title, it is a licence class: the regulator held me personally responsible for the trust account, for compliance, and for the conduct of everyone working under me. For nine years there was nobody above me to escalate to.

I did it alongside a fabulous team of support from RE/MAX Realtron, who looked after the day-to-day of the trust accounts, the compliance and the conduct. The responsibility was still mine, and I would not have wanted it any other way, but I never pretended I carried it without them.

When the franchise renewal came round in 2026 I decided not to commit to another five years, because I am going to Florida. I went back to RE/MAX Realtron Realty as a Broker, which keeps me working in the business while I make the move.

I have done every job in this business, most of them at the same time. I would like to do fewer of them, better, with people around me.

Where the years went.

The overlap between the fashion years and the move into property is real, not a gap in the record.

  1. 1986 – 1997
Merchandising and brand, family apparel business
    Streetwear · Streetforce · Jezebel · Haight & Ashbury

Over ten years on the brand side alongside my father and brother. Positioning, merchandising, and how a label is presented to the person buying it. It overlapped the start of the real estate career.

  2. 1990 – 1991
    Real estate
    RE/MAX MVP

Where I started, at the brokerage owned and operated by my late brother Meb Dhalla.

  3. 1997 – 2006
    Property investment, United States
Ten years in the US market

A full decade in the United States, buying, renovating and reselling residential property on my own account. I was not licensed in the US, so the Florida licence comes next, but the market is not new to me.

  4. 2007 – 2008
    Branch Administrator
    RE/MAX Realtron Realty Inc.

Managed the Branch Manager and Broker's meetings with agents and the correspondence out of them; acted as primary point of contact for branch support staff; implemented and executed internal procedures; coordinated the weekly branch meetings. Learned the machine before working the front of it.

  5. 2008 – 2017
    Sales Representative
    RE/MAX Realtron Realty Inc.

Multiple years on the branch Top 10 list, and RE/MAX Canada awards annually. A referral-built practice; several clients from this period are still with me.

  6. Feb 2017 – 2026
    Broker of Record and Owner
RE/MAX Realtron Rashida Dhalla Realty, Brokerage

Personally accountable to the Registrar for the brokerage's regulatory compliance, trust accounts, and the activities of every agent registered with the brokerage. The work went well beyond sales: brokerage operations, agent oversight, compliance, training, administration and day-to-day management. When the franchise came up for renewal I chose not to sign another five-year term, because of the move to Florida.

  7. 2026 – present
    Broker
    RE/MAX Realtron Realty Inc.

Back at Realtron as a Broker, representing buyers and sellers and preparing market analyses while I get ready to move to Florida.

Licence and recognition.

Toronto is one of the most demographically diverse markets in North America. Running the actual negotiation in someone's first language changes what gets understood before anyone signs.

What does Broker of Record mean?

It is a licence class rather than a seniority title. Ontario requires every brokerage to have one, and that person is personally responsible to the regulator for the trust account, for compliance, and for the conduct of everyone operating under the brokerage. I held it for my own brokerage from February 2017 to 2026, which meant nine years with nobody above me to escalate to.
